هل للدراسات الثقافية مُستقبَلات؟ وهل ينبغي لها ذلك؟ (أم ما الخطب في نيويورك؟)

تتناول هذه الورقة وضعَ الدراسات الثقافية، أساسًا في الولايات المتحدة وشمال أوروبا. وهي، إذ تدافع عن فهمٍ جذريّ للسياقية والاقترانية لمشروع الدراسات الثقافية، ترى أنّ هذا الحقل قد تبلور في صيغ مخصوصة استجابةً لاقترانٍ جيو-تاريخيّ بعينه. غير أنّ هذا الاقتران قد تغيّر تغيّرًا ملحوظًا، في حين تصلّبت تلك الصيغ الأقدم للدراسات الثقافية وتكاثفت لتشكّل «مركزًا» حدّ من قدرتها على الإسهام في فهمٍ أدقّ لما «يجري»، ولما قد يكون عليه المستقبل، وكذلك لوقائع وإمكانات كلٍّ من الهيمنة والمقاومة.
وتقترح الورقة فهمًا للاقتران الراهن بوصفه صراعًا، من اليمين ومن اليسار على السواء، ضد الحداثة الليبرالية، ومحاولةً لصياغة حداثة بديلة بوصفها أفقًا للمستقبل. كما تشير إلى بعض السبل التي قد يتعيّن على الدراسات الثقافية أن تعيد التفكير في ذاتها من خلالها، إن أرادت أن تستجيب على نحو ملائم لهذا الاقتران.
